Amazon Unveils Bedside Device That Tracks Sleeping Patterns

A bedside Amazon gadget may eventually be able to detect whether you are sleeping or not.The e-commerce and tech giant announced on Wednesday that it will begin selling a gadget that can track sleeping habits without a bracelet later this year.
According to the Seattle-based startup, the gadget, named Halo Rise, would track different stages of sleep throughout the night by measuring a user’s movement and breathing patterns using no-contact sensors and artificial intelligence. According to Amazon, the gadget will cost $139.99 and “does not feature cameras or microphones.”

The Halo Rise is the most recent addition to Amazon’s Halo series, which also includes a fitness tracker that can monitor sleep habits and physical activity. In addition to letting customers wake up to their favourite tunes and a light that “simulates the hues and progressive brightening of a sunrise,” Amazon said the gadget can interact with its virtual assistant, Alexa.

The new product showcases the company’s expanding efforts to incorporate its technology into consumers’ lives and increase its focus on wellness. The most recent example of its expanding healthcare aspirations is its planned $3.9 billion acquisition of the primary care company One Medical. The Federal Trade Commission is presently examining the transaction.

On Wednesday, Amazon, which has been under fire for how it handles customer data, promptly provided reassurance that the data in the Halo Rise gadget will be protected, stating that “health data is secured in transit and at rest in the cloud.”

According to the firm, “Amazon Halo health data is never sold and is not utilised for marketing, product recommendations, or advertising.”

Separately, Amazon said that it will introduce the first Kindle that allows users to write on, the Kindle Scribe. Additionally, it will deploy new Echo devices and add more functionality to its Astro home robot and Ring doorbell cameras.
