At the keynote conference of Google IO 2022, the Google Pixel 6a was confirmed.

According to the ‘a’ in its name and the series’ norms, this is a budget-friendly version of the Google Pixel 6. We’re still waiting for additional information regarding the phone, though.

The Pixel 6 retains a surprising number of features from its bigger brothers, despite significant downgrades in certain areas.

Although the Google Pixel 6a’s release date is still a long way off, here’s everything you need to know about it before you buy one.

The Google Pixel 6a costs $449, £399, or $749 in Australia. Pre-orders begin on July 21 in the United States and Australia, with the phone going on sale on July 28. We were astonished to learn about it so fast after such a long period.

There’s no indication of a UK release date yet, so it might be even later, but it’ll happen eventually.

It comes in white, green, and black, or chalk, sage, and charcoal, to give the colors their official names.

Display

The Google Pixel 6a has a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a punch-hole cut-out, much like the other Pixel 6 phones. It has a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels per inch and a 429 pixels per inch, but only a 60Hz refresh rate, which may disappoint some users.

The display, at the very least, enables Always-on Display, which is a feature that not many mid-range phones offer.

The phone features the same camera bar as its brothers, but smaller lens cut-outs, which we feel makes it more discreet.

It features a ‘3D thermoformed composite back,’ which seems like a fancy way of saying plastic, according to Google. At the very least, this should make it more resistant to drops.

The screen is covered by Gorilla Glass 3, which is harder than regular glass but not as robust as certain displays, and it measures 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.9mm and weighs 178g. The Pixel 6a also boasts a ‘tactile metal frame’ and is dust and water-resistant, with an IP67 rating.

Batteries and Cameras

In that hefty bar, the Google Pixel 6a cameras include a 12.2MP f/1.7 primary camera and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera. Expect to take no super-high-resolution selfies because the front-facing camera is only 8MP.

Magic Eraser for erasing irritating elements in images and Real Tone for more correctly balancing portrait mode for folks with non-white complexion are both brought over from the Pixel 6. You may also record video in up to 4K resolution at 60 frames per second.

What is the capacity of the battery? Google claims that the 4,410mAh battery will last for more than a day of use. The charging current is 30 watts.

Specifications and Performance

The Google Tensor chip from previous Pixel phones has been brought over to the Pixel 6a, which should make it as capable as those earlier smartphones and explain why they have the same photographic functions.

Aside from that, you’ll receive 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which are rather usual for a phone in this price bracket.

The operating system is Android 12; sadly, the device is too early for Android 13; nonetheless, Google has already stated that the Pixel 6a will receive five years of upgrades (Although some of them will very certainly be security fixes).

It also includes a fingerprint scanner built into the touchscreen and dual speakers.
