Today, OPPO said that it has become a Premier member of the nonprofit Open 3D Foundation (O3DF), a division of the Linux Foundation. By sponsoring open-source initiatives in 3D graphics, rendering, and game development, the O3DF was established in 2021 to encourage collaboration and resource sharing among creators. The Open 3D Engine (O3DE), the spearhead project of the O3DF, is a cross-platform, open-source engine that can power AAA games and 3D environments of cinematic quality. The O3DF has 25+ more prominent technological businesses as supporting members, including Adobe, Amazon Web Services, Intel, and Microsoft.

By becoming a member of the Foundation, OPPO will not only help advance and adapt 3D graphics technology for mobile devices, but will also improve the performance of 3D graphics on them by collaborating with other top business players. The O3DF Governing Board and its Technical Advisory Committee will see strong participation from OPPO as part of its commitment to the O3DF. The creation of a working group dedicated to the adaptation and development of the O3DE on mobile devices will include participation from OPPO as well.

Hansen Hong, Director of OPPO Software Technology Planning, stated that 3D graphics technology has developed into a necessary component of contemporary civilization. Application fields include visual effects, gaming, medical imaging, and next-generation content like Metaverse. “At this early moment in the organization’s growth, we are thrilled to become a Premier Member of the Open 3D Foundation. We are excited to contribute to the Open 3D Engine with an emphasis on mobile platforms through our work with the Foundation. Together with the Mobile Device Working Group, we will produce more effective but immersive and realistic rendering apps for mobile consumers while providing O3DE developers with mobile development experiences that are slicker and more user-friendly.”

The O3DE project’s executive director and general manager of digital media and games at the Linux Foundation, Royal O’Brien, said, “We’re happy to welcome OPPO to the community and look forward to its contributions in aiding the advancement of 3D graphics standards.” “The benefit of O3DE’s modular design is personified by new members like OPPO, which makes it simpler for developers to create 3D solutions that mix the technologies most suited to a variety of use cases. The way that modular design encourages extension and adaptation from our core technology is best illustrated by mobile gaming.”

With a photorealistic 3D renderer and other capabilities, the O3DE is a modular, open-source, cross-platform 3D engine designed to power everything from AAA games to high-fidelity simulations and 3D worlds worthy of the big screen. The engine is accessible anywhere and has an Apache 2.0 and MIT licence. Because of its entirely modular design, the O3DE enables developers to select the functionality they want. The engine’s open-source design and modular structure make it extremely scalable, allowing developers to include new tools, features, and development procedures into their projects. In the meanwhile, its cross-platform compatibility enables real-time 3D assets and tools to be interchangeable and portable across development platforms, freeing up the imagination of artists and developers all around the world.

The addition of OPPO to the O3DF community will hasten the development of O3DE capabilities and features particularly for mobile devices, enabling the usage of cutting-edge computer graphics technologies like ray tracing in more mobile apps. OPPO successfully unveiled the ColorOS Ray Tracing 3D Wallpaper at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March of this year, bringing interactive ray tracing apps to smartphones for the first time. Users may view in real-time as virtual light interacts with virtual settings to generate shadows, reflections, and other convincing light effects simply tilting their smartphone.

In order to improve access to technology and provide more people the chance to live better lives, OPPO will continue to collaborate with partners and developers through the O3DF and other initiatives.
